San Andres and Providencia beaches have been named in the top 10 most popular beaches in South America by tourism recommendation website, TripAdvisor.
This accolade marks the second consecutive year that the Colombian islands have been voted into the top 10. The vote was based on the places most recommended by millions of TripAdvisor readers during the past year. TripAdvisor works by inviting the general public to publish reviews on the destinations which in turn influence decisions on where to visit by other travellers. Colombia Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism noted that during the first six months of 2013 there has been 9.4% increase of international travellers visiting San Andres compared to the same period in 2012. This collates to a rise from 27,539 visitors in 2012 to 30,123 visitors in 2013.
Sandy pearl white beaches with a mist of warm, crystal-clear waters specked with mangroves encapsulate the Archipelago. The aptly named ‘Sea of Seven Colours’ surrounding the islands, encompasses some of world’s most extensive coral formations blended with an abundance of colourful marine life, giving a multi-coloured glow and making it a perfect spot of scuba diving and snorkelling.
Colombia’s new tourism campaign, “Colombia is Magical Realism”, pulls inspiration from experiences of thousands of foreigners during their trips throughout the country. The words “Magical”, “Unique” and “Surprising” were echoed again and again when describing Colombia and these have become the heart of the campaign. This latest triumph, gives the campaign a further stamp of approval within the world tourism market.
“We have responded to the surge and diversification in tourism within the islands by promoting the array of unique experiences accessible to visitors. The seven tones of the waters surrounding San Andres might be normal for us but for a tourist it is a magical image and an unforgettable experience. The mix of unrivalled mix of organic beauty with sun, sand and adventure has made San Andres and Providencia a top spot for the 20’s Market.” – Maria Claudia Lacouture, President of Proexport Colombia.
